Carolyn’s Notes on I AM A SOUL

My duo partner Spencer and I were sandwiched into a window and middle seat on a flight across Canada. In the coveted aisle seat was a man heartily enjoying a book by one of the “New Atheists” – I can’t remember if it was by Dawkins or maybe Hitchens. (Let’s call it “Ditchkins”.)

Spencer is never one to turn down a good conversation so he started chatting this fellow up. It turned out he was a thoughtful professor of something or other who was convinced that no case could be made for any existence beyond this material world. Pretty soon all three of us were in a lively discussion about synapses and neurons and whether there is any reality beyond that which can be built from molecules.

I found myself stymied. How does one argue for Transcendence without just sort of mumbling about beauty and art and hunches and instincts?

You know how, when you lose an argument, a thought comes into your head an hour or a day later and you think THAT’S what I should have said? “I Am a Soul” is what I should have said. I wrote it a few days after the airplane conversation, and if I can ever track that professor down, I’ll thank him for the inspiration!

The TRUE Tall Tale of the Coming of Christ.

“This Christmas will be the fifth consecutive year that I’ve performed what I hesitantly call a musical about the birth of Christ. The reason ‘musical’ doesn’t really work is that when we think of a musical we usually think of people dressed like donkeys and evenings full of badly delivered speaking parts. What makes this bunch of songs unique is that I wanted to remind (or teach) the audience that the story of Christmas doesn’t begin with the birth of Jesus. Many people tend to forget or have never even learned that the entire Bible is about Jesus, not just the New Testament.

So the musical begins with Moses and the symbolic story of the Passover (Passover Us) and works its way through the kings and the prophets with their many prophecies about the coming Messiah (So Long, Moses) to the awful four hundred years of silence before God told Mary she’d be having a baby (Deliver Us).

After the song called Matthew’s Begats, which lists the genealogy of Jesus, the story picks up in more familiar territory with Mary and Joseph and the actual birth (It Came To Pass, Labor of Love). The final song is called Behold, the Lamb of God, which ties together the Passover and the beauty and scope of the story.” — Andrew Peterson

I heard a theologian say that we tend to be dualists—we imagine God and Satan as virtually equal opponents in an epic battle—but that in reality Satan and all the power of evil wouldn’t cover the head of a pin in comparison to the largeness of God’s love and his power. I love that idea—that however messed up this world is, it was God’s love that brought us into being, and there isn’t any doubt that God’s love is going to win in the end.”

Arends graduated from Trinity Western University in Langley, BC with a

degree in psychology and English. She lives in Surrey, BC with her husband

Mark, eleven-year-old son Ben, and eight-year-old daughter Bethany. In addition to her busy concert and speaking schedule, she teaches songwriting and performance courses at Pacific Life Bible College and writes a bi-monthly column for Christianity Today.
